In 1939, Mao Zedong wrote a eulogy entitled 'In Memory of Norman Bethune' to commemorate a foreign communist doctor Norman Bethune. In this essay, Mao extolled Bethune's 'utter devotion to others without any thought of self', advocating that everybody should learn from him and strive to be 'a man who is of value to the people'. This essay became a spiritual classic that united the hearts and minds of the Chinese people. Zhao Puchu, who held Chairman Mao in high esteem and agreed with the values set out in the essay, copied a core passage from it. This calligraphic work demonstrates his support for Mao Zedong Thought and conveys his own patriotic sentiments. The work exhibits a rhythmic momentum in flowing brushwork, where thought and art meet.
