Despite their age difference, Liu Yazi and Zhao Puchu were friends. They understood each other well in terms of democratic movements and poetry writing. When The Collected Works by Liu Yazi was published in 1983, the seventy-seven-year-old gentleman wrote a ci poem (Tune: Silk-Washing Stream) to celebrate the occasion. In this poem, the poet mentioned a cultural event that took place in Huairen Hall in 1950, at which Chairman Mao wrote a ci poem in response to Liu Yazi using the same metrical pattern called 'Silk-Washing Stream'. Zhao also recalled, 'The chequered history of South Society will be remembered', and expressed his conviction that 'Chinese literature would flourish in abundance'. This ci poem is written in an implicit style, and the dignified writing combines camaraderie with superb calligraphic artistry.
