On Calligraphic Debt, running script, hanging scroll

Artist: Zhao Puchu

Date: Modern

Material: Ink on paper

Description

Zhao Puchu gained early fame for his calligraphy and once served as Vice Chair of the China Calligraphers Association. Throughout his life, calligraphy was never a means of making money for himself; rather, it was a way of making friends and fundraising for those in need. As requests for his calligraphic work never ceased, he did his best to fulfil them, believing it to be a way of reciprocating people's kindness. This calligraphic work recounts the tale of an ancient official overwhelmed by requests for paintings and calligraphy, who exclaimed, 'How can I manage so many creditors!' Zhao Puchu created this dignified, free-spirited piece when he was seventy-nine.
