An excerpt from The Art of War by Sun Tzu, running script, hanging scroll

Artist: Zhao Puchu

Date: Modern

Material: Ink on paper

Description

The sentence, which is derived from the section On Terrain · The Art of War by Sun Tzu, emphasizes that a commander should always prioritize the interests of his country and its people above all else. He should neither seek fame nor avoid the risks involved in decision-making. By doing so, he will be considered a paragon of leadership. Zhao Puchu originally wrote this sentence for the Kanazawa City Government in Japan, but later adopted it as his own motto. This work features weighty and steady brushwork, executed in a rustic and unadorned style.
