On 12 August 1978, the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and China was formally signed in Beijing. On that same day, Zhao Puchu wrote this qü poem to celebrate the joy experienced by both nations upon hearing the news. It reads: 'Great verve rising out of thousands of mountains; joyous laughter resounding across the sea.' Zhao also expressed his best wishes for Sino-Japanese friendship as follows: 'May the Pacific Ocean forever protect the flowers of peace, and may the two countries unite in opposition to hegemonism.' This work is a draft of the final version that was presented to Mr. Hao Fu, the Chinese Ambassador to Japan at the time. It boasts moist, fleshy brushwork executed with strength and grandeur. Influences from the calligraphic masters, such as Yan Zhenqing and Mi Fu, are also evident. Zhao created it at the age of seventy-two.
