Artist: Zhao Puchu

Date: Modern

Material: Ink on paper

Description

After diplomatic relations were established between China and South Korea, Zhao Puchu was invited to the Northeast Asian Buddhist Leaders' Conference for Peace, held in Seoul in October 1992. During the conference, he was awarded an honorary PhD degree by Dongguk University. This work is a preliminary draft of a piece that Zhao Puchu wrote for President Roh Tae-woo, which the calligrapher kept for himself. It contains an excerpt from a shi poem by Choe Chiwon, a poet from the Unified Silla period who had studied in Tang China. The excerpt conveys Zhao's cosmopolitan view of the universe and expresses his wish for lasting peace in Northeast Asia. He produced this work at the age of eighty-six.
