Wenshu Monastery (lit. 'Manjushri Monastery'), the best-preserved temple in Chengdu, serves as the seat of the Sichuan and Chengdu Buddhist Associations. The monastery is also renowned for enshrining the sarira of Sakyamuni and the parietal bone relics of Master Xuanzang. According to Zhao Puchu's remarks on this work, he rewrote Master Poshan's couplet, which was originally engraved on two wooden panels hung in the monastery. It reads: 'The Buddhist sun, shining high above in the sky, embraces the earth', and 'The wisdom pearl, rising from the Ocean of Bhūtatathatā, illuminates all directions'. Executed in a dignified and serene style by the eighty-year-old gentleman, this work conveys an immaterial and unworldly mood.
