Sentences from the Avatamsaka Sutra, running script, hanging scroll

Artist: Zhao Puchu

Date: Modern

Material: Ink on paper

Description

These sentences were excerpted from the Practices and Vows of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, a chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra, and were presented to the philanthropist Sir Run Run Shaw by Mr. Zhao Puchu. Mr. Zhao praised Sir Run Run Shaw for his widespread donations, with the words: 'Thus does the Bodhisattva impartially benefit all living beings.' This calligraphic work incorporates elements from exemplary pieces by renowned ancient calligraphers, including the Two Wangs, Chu Suiliang and Zhao Mengfu. It represents the 'Zhao style' from his later years.
