Two five-character sentences, running script, hanging scroll

Artist: Zhao Puchu

Date: Modern

Material: Ink on paper

Description

The first sentence, 'Integrity and fortitude are my qualities', comes from a poem by Tao Yuanming called Encountering a Fire in the Sixth Month of Wushen Year, while 'My undertaking needs unremitting efforts' is an excerpt from Eleven Poems of Autumn Reflections, composed by Han Yu. In this work, Zhao Puchu combines these two sentences to convey his hopes for those who receive them, namely that they will embody these qualities and pursue their careers with unwavering dedication. The undated work exhibits a mood of unworldliness, unaffectedness and unrestraint, suggesting that Zhao probably created it around 1990.
