Zhao Puchu was renowned for his profound knowledge of the Chinese classics and Buddhism. In his later years, he adopted a philosophical attitude towards death. Once, he fell in the courtyard but was unharmed despite his advanced age of nearly ninety. He then composed a shi poem to express his state of mind after the fall: '...rose with efforts, but to see a skyful of rosy glows', demonstrating his vigour and optimism in old age. His calligraphy features rigorously structured characters rendered with splayed strokes, exhibiting a sense of relaxed ease. Zhao completed this work at the age of eighty-seven.
