Su Danian (1296-1364) is also known by his zi (designated name) Changling and his hao (literary names) Xijian and Yugong. His family lived in Yangzhou for generations. Amid the warfare of the late Yuan dynasty, he traveled frequently to Songjiang. Adept in painting and calligraphy, he was a close friend to Yang Weizhen and was admired by the literati. This work was created for Zhang Jing upon his appointment as an official in Jiading (in present-day Shanghai). Zhang Jing, zi Dechang, served under Zhang Shide (brother of Zhang Shicheng) and was later transferred from Jiading to Songjiang Prefecture (in present-day Shanghai). Zhang Jing served as administrative staff there. He was a close friend of Zheng Yuanyou, Ni Zan, and Zhang Yu, and was deeply involved in the artistic circles of the Jiangnan region during the late Yuan. This piece reflects the communication among literati in the Shanghai area then.
