Li Shutong (1880-1942), with the monk name Yanyin and widely known as Master Hongyi, was a native of Pinghu, Zhejiang, who resided in Shanghai for two decades. He made great achievement in art and literature, particularly in calligraphy. Xia Mianzun (1886-1946) was a pioneering figure in China's New Literature Movement. Feng Zikai (1898-1975) studied under both Li and Xia, following their artistic styles and spirit. This postcard was sent by Li from Fujian to Xia and Feng, who were then working at the Kaiming Bookstore in Shanghai (near present-day Fuzhou Road and Wuzhou Road). In the correspondence, Li mentioned the publication of "Protection for Living Beings" (Hu Sheng Hua Ji), a collaborative work by Li and Feng, which was published by the Kaiming Bookstore.
