Description

Ren Xiong (1823-1857), also known by his zi (designated name) Weichang and hao (literary name) Xiangpu, was a native of Xiaoshan (present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang province). He once lived in Suzhou and Shanghai, supporting himself by selling his paintings. Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884), also known by his zi Huishu and hao Bei'an, was a native of Kuaiji (present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang province). Zhao Zhiqian excelled in calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. Zhou Xingyu asked masters of the Shanghai School to paint the portraits of the three Zhou brothers from Shaoxing. Zhou Xingyu (1826-1884), also known by his zi Yunshu, rose to the positions of Salt Commissioner (Yanyun Shi) of Liangguang and the Inspector (Ancha Shi) of the Department of Justice in Guangdong. Zhou Xingyu and his two elder brother Xingjian (zi Suren) and younger brother Xingyi (zi Jikuang) were accomplished poets. The three Zhou brothers all left a substantial body of literary work.
