Lin Fengmian (1900-1991), a native of Mei county, Guangdong, served as the first president of the National Academy of Art (the predecessor of the China Academy of Art). From 1951 to 1977, he lived at Nanchang Road in Shanghai and worked as a painter at the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. Throughout his career, he advocated for the "combination of Chinese and Western art", incorporating gouache and watercolour into ink painting to express the poetic spirit of traditional landscapes through colour and light. He produced a series of seascapes, including this painting, which portrays a tranquil nighttime fishing scene by the shore.
