Liu Haisu (1896-1994), a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu, was a painter and art educator. In 1912, together with Wu Shiguang and others, he founded China's first private modern art school—the Shanghai Painting and Fine Arts Institute, which later evolved into the Nanjing Academy of the Arts. This hanging scroll was painted in 1940 while Liu was in Southeast Asia. During this period, he organized charity exhibitions with overseas Chinese communities in locations such as Java, Indonesia, and the Malay Peninsula, donating and selling paintings to support Chinese War of Resistance Against Japanese Invasion. The work depicts a white peacock perching on a rugged rock, with pine branches extending from the cliff with pine branches. The painting conveys an image of noble solitude and resilient pride.
