Huang Binhong (1865-1955), named Zhi and also known by his zi (designated name) Pucun and hao (literary name) Binhong, was a native of She county, Anhui. He resided in Shanghai for 28 years and taught at institutions including the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. His painting broke new ground through a profound mastery of traditional brush and ink techniques. This hanging scroll was painted in 1953 while Huang was living by West Lake in Hangzhou and teaching at nowadays China Academy of Art (then Central Academy of Fine Arts in East China). Having sketched Mount Huang for multiple times, Huang Binghong depicted the hot springs in this painting. It was painted from memory in his later years. The rich and thick texture is a an example of the "Dark Binhong" style.
