Sun Xueni (1889-1965), named Hong, was native to Songjiang (now in Shanghai). Ying Yeping (1910-1990) was native to Ninghai, Zhejiang province. They both worked as painters in the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. This painting depicts the grand land reclamation project on Chongming Island in 1960 with the new Chinese landscape painting style. It captures the heroic epic of the people responding to the call of working on land reclamation at the state-owned Xinhai Farm, and building the base for agricultural and sideline products in Shanghai. The artwork reflects the city's collective memory of creating "a green island on the sea".
