This exhibition is to present comprehensively, for the first time in China, the history and culture of Silla. Located on the Korean Peninsula, Silla's history is presumed to date back to approximately 57 BCE according to the later compiled Samguk Sagi, and its rule ended in 935 CE. Based on its strong foundation of iron smelting, Silla cultivated a unique culture over the long course. Its culture is manifested in a variety of fields, including magnificent metalwork represented by gold crowns, as well as and Buddhist art.
The exhibition offers a multifaceted perspective into Silla through three themes: The Culture of Gold, International Exchanges, and Buddhist Art. The Culture of Gold section highlights the cultural heritage of a confident and prosperous Silla, with gold crowns serving as the ultimate symbol of this golden age. International Exchanges is a theme that reveals Silla's openness and dynamism. Buddhism, as the ideological foundation of Silla society, exerted a profound influence on art and culture as a whole. The numerous temples that once appeared densely throughout Gyeongju evoke the supreme status of Buddhism in Silla society.
We hope that this exhibition will allow our visitors to experience the historical and artistic value of Silla and the beauty of its culture, offering a glimpse into the Silla.
