Introduction

Ceramics are not merely utilitarian objects and works of art; they are also vivid historical artifacts that unveil the dynamic narrative of ancient material cultures. Their production and consumption permeate every era and social stratum throughout history. Unlike other materials, ceramics possess remarkable durability, allowing researchers to identify their age, provenance, and type even from fragments. These unique characteristics make ceramics an ideal medium for exploring ancient trade and cross-cultural interactions.

From Tang to Qing eras, Chinese ceramics were exported on a grand scale, bearing witness to the unfolding history of intercultural communication. Their designs chronicle the intricate interplay of economic, cultural, and technological forces. The rise and fall of kilns narrate the changing tides of trade and the evolution of ports. Relics salvaged from shipwrecks piece together the map of trade networks. The acceptance of Chinese ceramics in foreign markets reflects the convergence, encounter, and fusion of cultures.

As a proud cultural symbol, porcelain even shares its name with its homeland—China. This exhibition, through the lens of ceramics, recounts the rich tapestry of interactions between China and the world, showcasing the profound contributions of Chinese craftsmanship to global civilization.
