Dong Qichang (1555-1636), born in today’s Shanghai, was a representative of the Huating School (Songjiang Painting School).
This album depicts the landscape of the Suzhou and Zhenjiang areas, either modelled after an antique or scenery depiction. The brushwork was mainly the result of the imitation of the ancients but he also injected much of his own personality. Coloured inks and black ink are both applied, showing distinctive gradations. The brush strokes are slender and beautiful, and colours bright and graceful.
The signature reads ‘work done in Geng Shen (1620, a dating method known as Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches)’. It was an elaborate work done by the artist at the age of 66.
