Description

Chen Hongshou (1599-1652), also known by his zi (designated name) Zhanghou and hao (literary names) Laolian and later Huichi. A native of Zhuji (nowadays Shaoxing) in Zhejiang province, he was adept in painting figure, flower, and landscape. In his later years, the figures in his painting became exaggerated and decorative. This painting depicts a noble lady leaning on a cage covering an incense burner to scent her dress, as the child is chasing after a butterfly. The artist painted the clothes with gentle and clear brushstrokes with bright colours.
