Description

Zhang Zhong was a painter in the Yuan dynasty. His landscape painting followed the style of Huang Gongwang, one of the ‘Four Masters of Yuan’, and he was especially good at painting flowers and birds.

This picture depicts a vivid scene in autumn: The hibiscus branches and leaves stretching out at the waterside, and the flowers blossoming at the end of the twigs Two Mandarin ducks are playing in water, the female one tweeting, and the male playing with the waves with its head down. This ink painting is simple and primitive. The rocks are not decorated with moss, but dotted with ink. It is realisticelegant and charming.

There is an inscription of Zhang Zhong on the left of the painting ‘Zhang Zizheng made for Dezhang in the 5th month of the 13th year of Zhizheng Period’.
