Gong Xian (1618-1689), or Gong Qixian, is also known by his zi (designated name) Banqian and his hao (literary names) Yeyi and Chaizhangren. A native of Kunshan in Jiangsu province, he later settled down in Shangyuan (nowadays Nanjing, Jiangsu province). The most prominent artist among the "Eight Masters of Jinling", Gong was adept in landscape painting, especially renowned for the variation of ink in his paintings. The layering of light ink creates a structured composition stressed with clear highlight. The artist painted this painting at the age of 68 in the 24th year (1685) of the Kangxi reign.
