Hongren (1610-1664), originally named Jiang Tao, was also known by his hao (literary names) Jianjiang and Wuzhi. After the Ming dynasty collapsed, he became a monk. A native of Shexian, Anhui province, Hongren excelled at landscape painting after the style of Ni Zan. He was the leading figure of the "Four Masters of Haiyang". In this painting, Hongren intentionally imitated the "bull-hair texture" shading method of Wang Meng. This painting depicts a mansion in the mountains, where one person is looking afar by the stream and the other is washing the inkstone with attendants. The artist painted the painting at the age of 54 in the second year (1663) of the Kangxi reign.
