Shitao (1642-1707), whose secular name was Zhu Ruoji, is also known by his Buddhist name Yuanji, his zi (designated name) Shitao, and his hao (literary name) Da-di-zi. A native of Quanzhou of Guangxi province, the artist resided in Xuancheng and Nanjing in succession, and finally settled down in Yangzhou. One of the “Four Monk Artists of the Early Qing”, Shitao specialized in painting landscapes and flowers. This album was dated the 38th year of the Kangxi reign (1699), when he was fifty-eight.
