Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), initially named Jun, later changed to Junqing, with zi (designated names) Changshuo or Cangshi, and hao (literary name) Foulu, was a native of Anji (nowadays Huzhou, Zhejiang) who resided in Shanghai. He was skilled in calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. He was a leading figure in the Shanghai School of painting and one of the "Four Masters of the Shanghai School". One of his frequent subjects of painting was peach. Wu incorporated the calligraphic features of ancient bronze script and steles into his bold and expressive flower-and-bird paintings, creating a rugged and majestic style that brought new possibilities to the genre.
