Ren Xiong (1823-1857), also styled as Weichang, Xiangpu and Bushe, was born in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang province, and resided in Suzhou and Shanghai where he sold his paintings for a living. Strongly influenced by Chen Hongshou (1598-1652), an eminent master of Chinese painting, this highly gifted artist drew on various schools and painted on a wide variety of subjects. The painting is based on the classical allusion Ning Qi Feeding Cattle in the Master Lü's Spring and Autumn Annals.Ren sketched the outline and then applied colours to the drawing. This painting comprises multiple subjects including humans, animals and landscape, revealing the elegant taste of ancient literati.
