Description

This painting was created on a round spun silk fan in the Song dynasty, a masterpiece and an example of the court paintings by Southern Song artists. The figures are skillfully painted and highly accurate. The painting portrays a mother water buffalo and her calf grazing serenely during summer time, putting their size and movement in vivid contrast with each other. The loose neck rein suggests a harmonious and trusting relationship between humans and buffaloes. Oxen occupied a critical position in the agricultural society of ancient China.
