Zhao Mengfu, also known by his zi (designated name) Zi'ang and hao (literary name) Songxue Daoren, was a native to Wuxing (nowadays Huzhou, Zhejiang province). He was a descendant of the Song dynasty royal family and served as a hanlin (the emperor's literary retinue). He was revered as a top master of painting and calligraphy. In this painting, he employed the feibai method (a calligraphic method that involves applying a relatively dry brush to create dry and streaky brushstroke) to depict the rocks, method of semi-cursive script for painting orchid leaves, and method of clerical script for bamboo leaves. This is a representative painting of Zhao Mengfu.
