Dong Qichang (1555-1636), also known by his zi (designated name) Xuanzai and hao (literary name) Sibai, was a native of Huating (in present-day Songjiang, Shanghai) who rose to become Minister of Rites in Nanjing. He embodied the Zen philosophy in his painting theory and classified Chinese painting into "Northern and Southern Schools", championing the Southern School as the orthodox tradition of literati painting. His view influenced Chinese paintings in the next four centries. His calligraphy and painting synthesized classical styles while innovating beyond mere imitation. This album references masterpieces across dynasties yet maintains a distinctive voice, interspersing art theory with personal reflections.
