Description

Light cannot exist without darkness. Order cannot exist without disorder. The harmony of the cosmos can be thought to be dichotomous. Forces that appear contrary can be interdependent and interconnected. Two luminous carps wrapped around each other form the base of the brooch, creating a balance of two complementary forces interacting to create a dynamic structure.

The dragon is many things: a symbol of auspicious power and prosperity, a zodiac sign, a benevolent and wise creature, and a ruler of weather and water, among others. The dragon flies freely amongst the carps of the brooch, so delicately placed that they barely seem to touch. Its movements are fluid and airy, with an underlying impression of strength.

An expression of time and space is shown in the pendulum. The harmonic oscillation of the pendulum has historically been crucial as a timekeeping element and to measure the Earth's rotation. The very nature of the pendulum creates movement within the brooch. It is suspended from a fixed point, and the swings are influenced by gravity. The pendulum has unlimited vertical movement through the suspension position, giving the brooch numerous visual expressions.

The many components of Cosmos come together in an organic way. The two blue carps form the foundation with a circular form of natural duality. One has a dark head, and the other a light head. The blue titanium of their bodies is covered with incandescent diamonds and sapphires. A sweeping fish tail leads the viewer's attention to a dragon, whose body twists and bends as if in flight. Its eyes are bright with rubies, and its curved body is alight with diamonds. From the mouth of the dragon hangs a spherical pendulum. The rhombus-shaped bob holds a large irregularly shaped diamond, flanked by jadeite slices, rubies and diamonds.

Cosmos is a complex juxtaposition of thematic figures. It shows the harmony of the universe with its contrary forces seen in the carps, the dragon as a symbol of strength, and the pendulum as an articulation of time and space.
