These figures depict foreigners with distinctive features, likely grooms or merchants from Central Asian states of Sogdia. From the Northern dynasties to the Tang dynasty, they travelled to China for trade and settlement, often adopting their homeland names as surnames. Known as the "Nine Surnames of Zhaowu", these groups included An, Kang, Cao, Mi, Shi, He, etc.
