The shape of Jingdezhen spice boxes is derived from France, and similar silverware can be found in the collection of Louis XIV. In the 18th century, the way food was served at French banquets changed, giving rise to a series of new tableware. This type of spice box became a seasoning tool on the tables of the wealthy, and both Saint-Cloud and Rouen produced such soft-paste porcelain spice boxes. These boxes are divided into three compartments, holding salt, pepper, nutmeg, or a blend.
