Xu Wei (1521-1593) is also known by his zi (designated name) Wenchang and his hao (literary names) Tianchi Shanren and Qingteng Jushi. He was a native of Shanyin (present-day Shaoxing, Zhejiang province). Xu was famous for his paintings of trees, flowers, bamboos, and rocks rendered with limited brushstrokes. This painting depicts the objects with wide brushstrokes and ink splashes, displaying an unconstrained style. The variation of ink creates a misty and vibrant atmosphere in effortless beauty, illustrating the artist's super mastery of brush and ink. The artists inscribed three colophons on the painting.
