Xiang Shengmo (1597-1658) is also known by his zi (designated name) Kongzhang and his hao (literary name) Yi'an. A native of Xiushui (present-day Jiaxing, Zhejiang province), he was skilled in landscape painting, especially in painting pine trees. This painting employs simple and light brushstrokes with elegant colouring. The artist was 58 when he painted this scroll in the 11th year (1654) of the Shunzhi reign.
