Wang Hui (1632-1717) is also known by his zi (designated name) Shigu and his hao (literary names) Wumu Shanren and Gengyan Sanren. A native of Changshu in Jiangsu province, Wang Hui was distinguished for landscape painting, renowned as one of the "Six Masters of the Early Qing". This painting takes the style of Wang Meng with an intense composition, depicting an elegant scene of streams flowing among dense lush mountains. This is a work of his middle age. According to the inscriptions by Zha Shibiao and others, this painting was gifted to the artist's student Gu Xingwen.
