Li Yin, also known by his zi (courtesy names) Jinshi and Jinsheng and his hao (literary name) Shi'an and Kanshan Yishi, was a native of Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang). She was a concubine of Ge Zhengqi. In flower-and-bird painting, she followed the style of Chen Chun and specialized in depicting wild geese among reeds. This painting depicts wild geese roosting in a reed bed. The brushwork is vigorous yet moist, entirely devoid of the refined, courtly air often associated with female artists. The painting was created in the Renyin year (1662), when the artist was forty-seven years old.
