Fei Danxu, also known by his zi (courtesy name) Zitiao and his hao (literary names) Xiaolou, Ouweng, etc., was a native of Wucheng (present-day Huzhou, Zhejiang). He excelled in figure, landscape, and flower-and-bird painting. The figures in this painting are depicted with dignified expressions and graceful, leisurely postures, evoking the classical style of the Song dynasty. The lines are light, lively and unrestrained, and the colors are fresh and vibrant. The work was created in the Guimao year of the Daoguang era (1843), when the artist was forty-two years old.
