Location:No. 1 Exhibition Hall, Shanghai Museum
In April, 2018, the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Shanghai Municipality devised The Three-Year Action Plan to Promote Shanghai Culture and to Turn Shanghai into an International Cultural Cosmopolis, which established the overall goal of Shanghai to promote the Revolutionary Culture, Haipai Culture, and Jiangnan Culture. On November 5th, 2018, at the opening ceremony of the First China International Import Expo, Xi Jinping, the CPC General Secretary, endorsed the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and assigned it as one of the National Strategies.
Nowadays, the Yangtze River Delta has in a sense become synonymous with Jiangnan (literally, the south of the Yangtze River Delta). Shanghai, as the centre of the economy, finance, shipping, and trade in China, is the flagship city of the region. As one of the finest institutes for traditional Chinese artworks, the Shanghai Museum has amassed an outstanding collection of and performed fruitful research on the history and art of Jiangnan. For many years, we have been dedicated to our role as a custodian of traditional Chinese culture and have staged dozens of exhibitions on Jiangnan. It has become our all-important mission to leverage our rich collection to host Jiangnan-themed shows, which may help to implement the municipal and national strategies.
Jiangnan has long been a cultural trademark for a scenic place with rich produce and products and a galaxy of intellectuals. It has distinguished itself for its poetic inspiration, free-spirited lifestyle, and sense of responsibility. To best represent its art and history, we have come up with five sub-themes for the current exhibition. Nearly two hundred exhibits will be on display to showcase the Jiangnan keynote, which is valiant, elegant, and intellectual; the Jiangnan character, which may be summarized as courtesy and broad-mindedness; the Jiangnan figures, who are down to earth and self-disciplined; the Jiangnan life, highbrowed and secular at once; and the Jiangnan disposition, which is unfeigned and tolerant. Motivated by their glorious heritage, Jiangnaners will keep going with such inclusiveness, wisdom, and modesty in their pursuit of excellence.
