This year marks the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the Shanghai Museum. To celebrate this occasion, we have launched three gift-themed exhibitions since a year ago. They are "The Perpetual Prosperity," "Harvest from Generosity," and "Treasure of Prosperity." Indeed, the seventy-year history of our Museum is dotted with gifts from numerous donors, whose love and kindness have added to the splendour of China's museology and to the glory of our Museum. To acknowledge and commemorate our benefactors, the Shanghai Museum has a long tradition of exhibiting the treasures from them. Apart from permanent exhibitions, it has hitherto hosted thirty-three special exhibitions of gifts, the latest being "Treasure of Prosperity."
Our Museum receives gifts from and exhibits them to the people. Such interaction embodies the idea that the city is built by and for the people. This year, with selections of gifts for us, we will not only celebrate the Museum's seventieth "birthday" but also cheer the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
As to the celebration of our Museum's seventieth birthday, we have set four highlights: (1) to pay homage to our tradition and our predecessors and to extend our gratitude to the public and to our visitors; (2) to take a survey of our professional achievements, to have a closer look at our cause, and to record the history in which our Museum has been growing and thriving with our City, Shanghai; (3) to draw a finer blueprint for the future development of our Museum on the basis of experience and lessons; and (4) to promote the heritage of our Museum and enhance the charm of culture to the whole society.
The Shanghai Museum will continue to host exhibitions of gifts. We remain committed to the belief that our Museum is built by and for the people. May Beauty's rose never die and the gaudy Spring last forever.
