As the year 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-France diplomatic relations, the Shanghai Museum is proud to present, with the support of Cartier, the exhibition "Cartier, the Power of Magic" at the Shanghai Museum East. This exhibition serves not only as a reunion between the Museum and the Cartier Collection since our initial partnership in 2004 but also as a highlight of the 18th edition of China-France Cultural Spring (Festival Croisements) and the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism. Cartier, the globally prestigious jewelry Maison, boasts an illustrious heritage of luxury creations and archival treasures. Since its founding in 1847, it has been keeping up with the times, demonstrating unique insight, foresight, and a spirit of bold revolution and innovation, as a leader in modern jewelry and the realms of fashion and aesthetics.
This exhibition features over 300 exemplary pieces and archival documents from Cartier Collection, Cartier Archives, institutional and private collections, including jewels, clocks, watches, and objets d'art and archives. These dazzling exhibits embark our visitors on an immersive journey through a century of Cartier's enchanting artistry. From the resolute innovation of the three Cartier brothers to the feminist vision of designer Jeanne Toussaint, and from the lightness and delicacy of the Garland Style to the boldness and elegance of the panther jewels. Cartier has drawn inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of ancient civilizations and the vibrant spectrum of modern and contemporary art movements. With the wonderful imagination of a magician, the remarkable sensitivity to color of a painter, the meticulous commitment of a craftsman, and the heroic courage of a trailblazer, the French Maison has pushed beyond the boundaries of materials and techniques and achieved time and again excellence in the art of jewelry, forging an epic language of beauty and majesty.
Cartier's philosophy of transcending jewelry artistry to create timeless works of art closely mirrors the enduring values of ancient Chinese art in a state of subtle and profound harmony. Indeed, the mystical allure of Oriental art has, to some extent, nourished Cartier. The scholarly elegance of Chinese antiques, the effulgence of gemstones, and the unrestrained yet exquisite designs have coalesced into masterpieces that embody the refreshing vigor of nature and the lasting vitality of art. For the current exhibition, over thirty Chinese artworks have been handpicked, as if to create a mini-galaxy, to accompany Cartier's creations, involving our audiences in a dialogue on the eternal charm and splendor of art.
