Overview

"We are delighted by what we encounter, content in its temporary possession."

The phrase Zande, originated from Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion by Wang Xizhi, was adopted by the revered connoisseur-collector J.M. Hu as his studio name—expressing both the heartfelt joy J.M. Hu experienced upon discovering an exquisite antiquity and a philosophy of stewardship wherein these treasures are ultimately part of our cultural heritage to be shared with the world.

In 1950 and 1988, J.M. Hu and his wife, Ms. Wang Huayun, made two significant donations totaling over 300 ceramic artifacts to the Shanghai Museum. Their descendants have since continued this legacy, donating further select works from the family's Zande Lou collection.

Notable for its scale and exceptional quality, the collection spans from the Jin and Tang dynasties to the late Qing, with a core focus on Ming and Qing imperial porcelain. Among these, paired pieces from Qing imperial kilns are exceptionally rare.

Bringing together selected treasures of Ming and Qing porcelain, this exhibition highlights both imperial wares and remarkable artistic achievements. These works stand as a testament to J.M. Hu's devotion to the public good, reflecting the timeless wisdom of Zande—transient possession, lasting delight.
