Zhao Puchu Gallery
Introduction

Mr. Zhao Puchu (1907-2000) wore many hats through his life. He served as Vice Chair of the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Honorary Chair of the Central Committee of China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD), and President of the Buddhist Association of China (BAC). He was a close friend of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and a prominent religious and public leader. He was a great patriot who devoted his whole life to striving for progress, seeking the truth, and facilitating goodwill exchanges between China and other countries, and was always concerned about the peaceful reunification of China. He was also a philanthropist who took an active part in social assistance and disaster relief over a long period of time, and an eminent author, poet, and calligrapher with a worldwide fame. Besides his impressive attainments in classical Chinese poetry, such as shi, ci, and qu, Zhao created marvelous calligraphic works that are known for elegance, legibility, deftness and exquisiteness.

Shanghai is the place in which Zhao once worked and lived. He made tremendous contributions to the city's liberation and reconstruction. A showcase of Zhao's achievements in work, thinking and art, the exhibition Calligraphy by Zhao Puchu encompasses a wide range of his handwritten works, such as calligraphic scrolls, manuscripts, letters, and etc., which give us a glimpse into every stage of his life, show us his deep love for the Party and the nation, and reflect his broad mind and great spirit of propagating Buddhism for the benefit of the people. Visitors to this exhibition will also find a re-creation of a study and a living room inside Zhao Puchu's Residence at No. 1 Nan-xiao-shuan Hutong, Beijing. A documentary video clip about Zhao's fruitful career is also shown in this exhibition.
